Esalen Massage

Esalen®  Massage is known for its long flowing strokes,  slow pace, and the way the practitioner moves and rocks the the body to create a feeling of full body relaxation. Designed to give the client a sense of deep relaxation and integration of body, mind, and spirit, each massage is customized to meet your personal needs in the moment.

Esalen Massage also goes beyond the physical result of bodywork by focusing on energy exchange and psychological well-being. The goal of Esalen massage is to focus on the person as a whole, harmonizing body, mind and spirit through:

  • Relaxation  and Stress Reduction– The long flowing strokes in an Esalen massage coax your nervous system into a deep state of relaxation which allows the muscles to let go, the breath to deepen and the mind to get quiet.

  • Awareness – Once the mind gently shifts from thinking to being in the present moment we are able to focus attention on areas in the body where you may be holding tension.

  • Pain Relief - In your massage we will address any areas of concern using a variety of techniques to increase circulation, range of motion, flexibility and reduce pain.

A variety of techniques and modalities are incorporated into Esalen Massage, including Accupressure, Aromatherapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Thai Massage, Deep Tissue, Lymphatic Drainage, Mayan Abdominal Massage, Reflexology, and Energywork.

My intention as an integrative practitioner is to use all of the tools I have to invite and coax your body into a deeper state of relaxation, more breath, and more awareness.

When receiving an Esalen Massage you can expect long flowing strokes that travel from the top of your body all the way down, and back up again.  The pressure will vary as your body relaxes and opens to the touch, but will always be full handed and very contactful, listening to your body's response to the touch.   Once your muscles begin to warm up and relax, I will begin to use other techniques to move into those deeper layers of muscles, and help to bring your awareness to tension and holding patterns, to release and unwind.

  More about Esalen® Massage...

Esalen Massage was developed over 50 years at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, CA.  Milton Trager, Moshe Feldenkrais, and Ida Rolf were just a few of the early teachers and bodywork pioneers at Esalen, which soon became a real-life laboratory for experimentation in psychology, spirituality and the healing arts. Eventually, this experimentation led to the development of Esalen massage.  Esalen massage is an approach or way with in which we approach the body as a whole, and seeks to create an environment for each individual to relax into a deep healing, and nurturing space.  It is a beautiful dance; a relationship that leaves the giver feeling as good as the receiver.

Esalen massage is an eclectic blend of techniques and principles from various disciplines, including Swedish Massage, Sensory Awareness training, Craniosacral Therapy, Applied Kinesiology, Yoga, Tai Chi, and Gestalt Awareness, among others. Despite its varied roots, Esalen massage can be distinguished by the type of strokes it uses to connect and unify the entire body. Another important aspect of this therapy is the approach taken toward each client as a whole person, not as separate parts to be manipulated. Unlike outcome goals in other forms of massage, the practitioner’s primary goal in this approach is not the removal of localized pain or tension, though this is typically accomplished. Instead, the aim is usually to induce deep relaxation, integrate mind and body, and enhance total body awareness.

Another defining feature of Esalen massage is that it is largely intuitive. The practitioner does not impose a predetermined set of techniques on the recipient but instead tries to sense what is needed in each moment. Rather than working on the client, the practitioner works with the client, listening closely to messages being communicated through the client’s body and responding accordingly. Esalen massage is sometimes described as a “moving meditation,” due in part to the wholehearted focus displayed by practitioners.
